My Favourite Places to buy Secondhand Clothing

I learned to love second hand shopping as a student when I couldn’t afford much and through my mother-in-law’s love garage sales. When I got a corporate job after University I didn’t go to the thrift stores as much (it can be time-consuming) and I sort of lost touch with thrifting. When Wes and I moved outside of Toronto to start a family we started attending the same garage sales as his mom on weekends. You literally never know what you would find! We found it as entertaining as it was useful when we uncovered amazing finds like gorgeous vintage mirrors among the buns of steel video tapes.

Today I’ve fallen in love with some gorgeous boutique brands and have found some great options to buy them second hand. Below are my favourite spots to find my favourite brands for a great price online!

Check out my video with new and second-hand Dôen purchases!

    DÔEN

    Noihsaf Bazaar on Instagram

Noihsaf Bazaar is a reselling instagram account started by a woman in the midwest who loves Indie brands and wanted an easier and more accessible way to buy them. “Noihsaf” is “fashion” backwards in case you didn’t notice (neither did I for months) and has other categories under its umbrella including: kids, mens, home, active, vintage and ace and jig (their most popular brand). This is a popular place to find second-hand Dôen which comes up everyday. An average number of 50 items are listed in spurts at no specific time and range from earrings to coats.

How it works: When an item is listed and you’re interested, comment under the photo with your zip/postal code and tag the seller’s name which is provided in the description. Some sellers are totally okay with sending to Canada but you’ll have to pay extra shipping. I usually comment with my American mailbox and then ask if they’re willing to send it to my Canadian address, most people will. If you’re the first person to comment the seller will message you or comment that you should message them and then you can make a payment agreement. Paypal is usually used. Some sellers have the price and then the word “gifted” after which means to use the friends and family option when paying for Paypal. The other payment option on paypal is “pay for goods or a service” which charges the seller 2.9% of the cost of the item so a lot of people prefer to avoid this. I always pay extra to cover the cost of the insurance because you’re covered if something goes wrong and it’s not that much extra.

Pros: Really interesting items, good prices- usually priced to sell, updated often, fun community of stylish people.

Cons: Listing times aren’t specified and a set often happens during work hours. You also usually have to make a quick decision! Dôen stuff goes fast so it’s helpful to have a list of what you want and acceptable sizes.

Hot Tip: Sign up for post notifications so you don’t miss out on a coveted item! Don’t be discouraged if you’re not the first person who comments. You may still get your item if the first person interested backs out because of size, etc. I was second in line for my unicorn item- the Doen rose top I’ve been looking for for months and I got it!

What I’ve bought on Noihsaf Bazaar:

    • Doen Thistle Top
    • Doen Oliver Dress
    • Doen Georgia Dress
    • Doen Capo Top
    • Doen Wildeve Dresses beige and black
    • Doen Buttercup Dress
    • Doen Rose Top in Rust Ditzy Floral

    The Real Real

The Real Real is an online luxury consignment store. I forget how I found out about this retailer but as soon as I found out they accept returns I was hooked!

How it works: The Real Real operates like any online retailer! Shop for an item like you normally would however the cart is timed so you have 20 minutes to check out.

Pros: Ships internationally and you can make returns!

    Cons:

    • Their prices can be higher than Noihsaf and Ebay
    • Even though it has a return policy it’s very short – 2 weeks
    • While they do consignment it’s not available for Canadians

Hot Tip: “On Hold” means the item is in someone else’s basket. Your shopping cart times out after 20 minutes so if it’s an item you’re looking for just wait! This is how I got my beloved Grasse dress.

What I’ve bought on The Real Real:

    • Doen Margeurite Dress
    • Doen Grasse Dress

    Ebay

Ebay is a site I completely forgot about until someone selling an item on Noihsaf pointed me to their consignment shop there. While my favourite instagrammers like Jane of Sea of Shoes and Jenny Walton frequent Ebay and Etsy regularly for unique vintage finds I think it’s quite the task to do and it takes a great eye. But I was happy to discover a plethora of second hand Dôen clothing!

How it works: There are different ways to buy: “Buy it now”, “bid”, or “make an offer” I’ve done all three of these and my favourite is to make an offer.

Hot Tip: When searching for a certain brand try different spellings and misspellings and including an accent if it has one. I was searching, “Doen” for a while and discovered a whole new crop of items when I included the accent – “Dôen”.

    What I’ve bought on Ebay:

    • Doen Yarrow Dress
    • Doen Remy Top
    • Doen Bernadette Sweater in Maple
    • Doen Harper Top

    SÉZANE

Sézane is surprisingly hard to find secondhand. Sometimes you can find it on Noihsaf, Ebay, and The Real Real but the best place I can find it is the Sézane Addict Facebook group. This is a really fun community of women who share their latest purchases, item inquiries and daily addict joys and woes. It’s also a great place to shop and ask for older Sézane items!

Other places to try find Second hand items:

Poshmark! This looks like a great option… for Americans. Sadly the site isn’t open to Canadians.

Depop! This option is super popular among Americans. Sign up for the app to shop their selection.
