Throughout the past few months I’ve been trying to avoid buying maternity-specific clothing because I want to invest in items I will love during and after pregnancy. But sometimes you have to hunt for those everyday pieces that makes you feel normal – like jeans!
I tried out a couple types of affordable jeans and I am here to report back! There are a couple waist options for maternity jeans 1) over the bump, and 2) under the bump. Then I tried 3 different washes: light, medium, dark and two styles: “boyfriend” and “skinny”.
Under-the-bump jeans include elastic at the waist of the jean either in a small panel or elastic gore that stems from the pocket. Anything under the bump turns out to be a very low rise so if it’s your preference than you’ll have to accommodate with some longer tops. The jeans I tried were the Topshop Mom Jean which I loved the leg and wash of.
Another option is Side Panel Maternity Jeans which include an elastic piece in the pocket. These look the most like your regular jean and is a great option for the beginning of pregnancy and post pregnancy.
I prefer over-the-bump jeans which means the elastic stretches over the baby bump. I like the coverage and find they stay up better. I tried two: the Jamie Jean from Topshop and the MAMA jean from H&M and although I prefer the Topshop version (they fit me better and they have different inseam lengths). The H&M version had a larger elastic piece that went all the way over my bump while the topshop version stops a few inches below my bust.
