I received this Sea New York dress last night and I was pretty worried about it because it didn’t have a lot of reviews and looks very big on most of the models online. I purchased this dress because one of my favourite designers, Casey Larkin of @MrLarkin raved about it. She sells Sea at her store (say that 5x fast) and in a post said she enjoyed wearing her pink version of this dress. I’m very influenced what the founders of my favourite fashion brands wear including Casey Larkin, Innika Choo, Christy Dawn, Katherine and Margaret of Dôen. They’re all creative entrepreneurs with flawless taste and they all have kids. As a mom I trust what they wear would also suit my lifestyle. So when Casey said she loved this dress I really wanted to try it. I found it on sale and after making the tough choice between “moss” or “bloom” I bought the green. Since I’ve been at the cottage I’ve been craving to wear more greens and blues. Your environment definitely makes an impact on your wardrobe! The dress arrived late last night and after tucking my kids into bed I came up and tried it and left it on.
The style of the dress is really relaxed and has a drop-waist which I’ve never opted for because I’m 5’3″ so I figured it would shorten me. Worn as is, the placement of the waist seam allows the dress to be comfortable and prevents the dress from falling easily into messes versus a true-waist or empire waisted dress. The placement of the waist seam does allow for a good belted moment as you can see. I love the pretty tiered skirt and the pleating that is repeated on the sleeve and bodice. If you’ve followed me for a while you know that I love a puffy sleeve and this one is gorgeous. The bottom of the sleeve is loose and is elastic so it’s comfortable. I saw a few people online talk about their love of the silhouette of this dress which is what I really like too. I’m often pulled toward voluminous styles and this one, in my normal size (4) has just the right amount of fabric.
The length is ideal for me in a practical way. I can go up and down stairs without holding my dress up and it’s very easy to work around the house and/or chase kids wearing this. It’s the ideal house dress. This is my version of leggings.
I love this styled with pastel colours and gold jewelry. I adore pink and I love how green and pink go together so my birkenstock sandals pair well. I don’t have any belts with me but I tried to test how it would look belted with a pastel blue tie and I think it’s pretty charming. Belting this dress takes the as-is loose, casual style and makes it traditional and feminine especially with a bow belt.
Ramie! If you saw my stories you’ll see this opened up quite wrinkly. After I gave it a quick steam and I tried it on and really enjoyed the feeling of the cotton lining that runs throughout (except in the sleeves). Ramie wrinkles easily but I love that casual crunchiness of the fabric. I was worried that it would be too wrinkly this morning after sitting on the couch all last night but the wrinkles softened by morning making me happy to wear it for the day. I have a few Ramie pieces (#KBEdit_Ramie) if you’re interested about the fabric. At the middle of the day around 35C (95F) this dress felt a little hot to wear. It was released in the spring so it works for not-so-hot summer days and will be a nice transition piece into fall with boots.
Sea has been on my radar ever since they did a collaboration with Sèzane a few years ago. I love their modern vintage designs and attention to details. Their pieces are very beautiful. I’m happy to have tested the waters of this brand with this Lucy dress.
